Table of Contents

When searching for solutions to hair thinning, many women turn to natural remedies to promote hair growth and maintain healthy strands. One such remedy that has gained massive popularity all over social media is the use of rosemary oil. But does rosemary oil help with hair growth and if so, how exactly?

Let’s dive deeper into how rosemary oil can benefit hair growth and why it’s worth incorporating into your hair care routine. You will also learn how to make and use your own rosemary oil for maximum results! However, if DIY isn’t your thing, don’t worry! I have a list of the best products for you to try included in this blog post. So, keep on reading!

Does Rosemary Oil Help Hair Growth

Short answer: yes!

Derived from the aromatic herb Rosemary (Salvia Rosmarinus), this essential oil has been revered for its therapeutic properties for centuries. Moreover, women all over the world have raved about the many benefits of rosemary oil because it not only grows hair longer but stronger too, with continued use.

Rosemary oil has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, who valued it for its medicinal properties. This essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the rosemary leaves, resulting in a potent elixir packed with beneficial compounds. Its primary constituents include cineole, camphor, and pinene, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties (more on this later).

How Does Hair Grow?

Before getting into the specific benefits of rosemary oil for hair growth, it’s essential to understand the basics of the hair growth cycle. Ever wondered how hair actually grows? Well, here’s how:

The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: anagen (growth phase), catagen (transitional phase), and telogen (resting phase). During the anagen phase, your hair follicles are in full-on production mode, churning out new hair cells at a rapid pace. The longer your hair stays in this phase, the longer the length of your hair!

Next comes the catagen phase where your hair takes a break! This phase marks the end of active hair growth. But don’t worry- it is only temporary because it lasts for about two to three weeks.

Lastly, during the telogen phase, your hair enters a period of rest, where the old strands shed and make way for new ones. This is where most of the shedding occurs! However, keep in mind that this shedding is entirely normal and necessary for healthy hair renewal!

Various factors can influence each phase of the growth cycle. From genetics and hormonal changes to lifestyle habits and environmental stressors, there’s a whole lot that can impact the health and vitality of your hair. However, that is a topic for another day!

What Does Scientific Evidence Suggest?

Numerous scientific studies have investigated the potential benefits of rosemary oil for hair growth. A study published in “Skinmed” in 2015 found that rosemary oil was as effective as 2% minoxidil in promoting hair growth (but with less scalp irritation) in individuals with androgenetic alopecia, a common form of hair loss. Another study published in “Phytotherapy Research” in 2013 demonstrated that rosemary oil, when combined with other essential oils like lavender and cedarwood, significantly improved hair growth over a period of six months.

What Do People Say?

Scores of people (both men and women) have reported positive experiences with using rosemary oil for hair growth. From reducing hair fall to improving overall hair health, the anecdotal evidence supporting the efficacy of rosemary oil is compelling.

TikTok alone has garnered over 3 Billion views of users uploading their own personal success stories with the #rosemaryoilforhairgrowth tag. Most of these users have shared before and after photos showcasing noticeable improvements in hair thickness and texture after incorporating rosemary oil into their hair care routine.

What Do I Say?

My own results are no different! I saw new hair growth around my hairline with consistent use of rosemary oil. In fact, my bald spot on my side part began to fill in with new baby hair. However, keep in mind that these results did not come overnight; in all honesty, I only began to see results around the 4-6 week mark! Also, it is important to note that during this time, I had focused on eating healthy, supplementing my diet with hair growth vitamins and got a good amount of physical activity/exercise in. All in all, i love using rosemary oil for my hair because it is lightweight, easy to wash out, and smells absolutely fantastic!

5 Benefits of Rosemary Oil For Hair

Now, let’s finally discuss the many benefits of rosemary oil for your hair. I’m sure you are wondering how the simple oil can promote hair health. To begin with, rosemary oil has several beneficial effects on the scalp and hair follicles, making it an effective remedy for promoting hair growth.

Let’s look at the benefits in a bit more detail.

1. Stimulates Hair Follicles

Rosemary oil’s active compounds, such as rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid, work to increase blood circulation when massaged into the scalp. Improved blood flow means more nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the hair follicles, stimulating their activity and encouraging hair growth. By jumpstarting dormant follicles and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle, rosemary oil aids in the emergence of new, healthy hair strands. Regular application can lead to visibly thicker and fuller hair, as follicles become more active and responsive to growth signals.

2. Strengthens Hair

Rich in nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals such as iron and calcium, rosemary oil nourishes and fortifies hair strands from root to tip. These essential nutrients help to repair damage, strengthen the hair shaft, and prevent breakage. Additionally, rosemary oil’s antioxidant properties protect hair from environmental stressors and free radicals, maintaining its structural integrity and reducing premature graying. With stronger hair, individuals experience reduced hair fall and increased resilience against damage caused by styling, heat, and external factors, resulting in stronger, more vibrant hair.

3. Improves Scalp Health

The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of rosemary oil make it effective in addressing common scalp issues like dandruff, itchiness, and fungal infections. By calming irritation and regulating sebum production, rosemary oil promotes a healthier scalp environment conducive to optimal hair growth. Its soothing properties alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation, allowing hair follicles to function efficiently. A balanced scalp, free from microbial imbalances, ensures that hair follicles remain unobstructed and capable of producing strong, healthy hair. Consistent use of rosemary oil helps to maintain scalp health, preventing conditions that may hinder the hair growth cycle.

4. Increases Hair Thickness

Through its ability to enhance blood circulation and deliver essential nutrients to the hair follicles, rosemary oil promotes thicker, denser hair growth over time. By nourishing the scalp and improving follicular health, it encourages the development of stronger, more robust hair strands. Regular application of rosemary oil strengthens the hair from its roots, resulting in visibly thicker and fuller-looking hair. Additionally, its antioxidant properties protect against damage, reducing hair loss and promoting the retention of existing hair. With continued use, you can expect to notice significant improvements in hair thickness and density, achieving a fuller and healthier head of hair.

5. Adds Shine and Luster

Rosemary oil’s conditioning properties help to smooth the hair cuticle, sealing in moisture and imparting a natural shine to the hair. By restoring hydration and enhancing the hair’s reflective surface, rosemary oil creates the appearance of smoother, shinier locks. Regular use of rosemary oil improves the overall texture and appearance of the hair, making it look healthier, more vibrant, and full of life. Its ability to nourish and moisturize the hair enhances its natural luster, leaving it soft, supple, and radiantly beautiful. Whether used as a standalone treatment or incorporated into hair care products, rosemary oil ensures that hair looks and feels its best, with a noticeable boost in shine and luster.

While rosemary oil is generally considered safe for topical use, some people may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. Note that it is best practice to always dilute pure rosemary oil with another carrier oil of your choice. However, as a general rule, always remember to perform a patch test before using rosemary oil extensively and discontinue use if you experience any adverse effects. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult with their healthcare provider before using essential oils.
