8 Oils That Repair Hair Quickly and Help Stop Hair Loss

Table of Contents

The oldest tried and tested home remedy for hair growth is to massage the scalp with natural oils. But are there oils that repair hair quickly? Over the years, I have tried so many oils on my head to help fix a wide variety of hair concerns like heat damage, frizziness, lost shine, and dry & brittle hair, just to name a few. Almost all of them gave me fantastic results with regular use. And now, I am going to pass this valuable knowledge on to you!

In this article, I am going to talk about the importance of using oils to stop hair loss, what kind of oils to use, their benefits, how to use them and how often to use them. Let’s read on to find out the top oils you need to include into your hair care regimen in order to help with hair health.

Importance Of Oil Treatment For Hair

But before we get into what oils to use, I want to tell you why it is important to oil your hair on a regular basis to prevent hair loss.

Your hair goes through a great deal of wear and tear on a day-to-day basis from styling, grooming, weather, stress, etc. As a result of this, hair becomes more and more worn out the longer it gets.

So why don’t we just keep our hair short by getting regular haircuts?

Yes, we definitely can and we really should be doing this. But while haircuts help to eliminate split ends so hair continues to grow longer, they won’t really do anything to help stimulate the hair follicles or nourish the individual hair strands to make it grow stronger. This is where oils come in to do their magic and give us the hair we dream of!

The importance of using oils to massage the head not only stimulates blood flow to the hair roots but it also provides nourishment to the hair strands so they remain strong and long.

Every oil on this list below has extraordinary properties and benefits within it. Some of these oils provide protection from sun damage, heat damage, and even lice prevention, believe it or not. While other oils on the list help immensely in treating dandruff and other scalp conditions, as well as enhance the rate at which the hair grows.

They are all natural, easy to find in stores, and easy to use as well. Some of these oils may be difficult to find in your local stores, so I will include a link from where you can a purchase each oil.

So, without further delay, let’s dive right in to the different kinds of oils that you can use to bring back your hair’s lost health.

1. Coconut Oil

The most popular oil for hair growth is coconut oil as it is loaded with Vitamin E, antioxidants, and essential minerals. The fatty acids contained in coconut oil penetrate deeply into the hair shaft locking in moisture, making hair silky, smooth, and shiny. Besides nourishing the hair strands and roots, coconut oil also protects the hair from the effects of sunlight, aging and heat damage.

You can use the oil as a leave in treatment before or after you wash your hair as it reduces protein loss from hair due to water damage. Alternatively, you can also use it before or after you style your hair to prevent hair from drying out due to styling tools. Massaging the scalp regularly with this oil can reduce scalp dryness and itchiness, signs that lead to dandruff. It can also promote new hair growth. The oil quickly solidifies when cold, so make sure you warm it up to a liquid consistency before you use it.

Many people have used coconut oil as a home remedy against head lice as it helps to remove these unwanted pests quickly. Coconut oil is also thought to be beneficial for preventing baldness, split ends, and gray hair. When I say “gray hair” prevention, I do not mean it works as a hair dye; all it means is that it slows down the birth of new gray hair.

All in all, the oil is notoriously known to convert dry, dull, damaged hair into soft, smooth, shiny, healthy hair!

2. Olive Oil

Olive oil contains oelic acid that helps block DHT production. High levels of DHT is known to lead to hair loss as it shrinks the hair follicles. Over time, this causes hair to grow thinner and break off before it can grow longer.

Olive oil protects the natural keratin in hair by smoothing out the outer cuticle, adding shine and softness to hair. Like Coconut oil, olive oil is rich in vitamin E and this makes it possible for it to act like a conditioner, providing nourishment to hair roots, moisturizing the scalp, treating & reducing split ends, and increasing growth of hair strands. This oil is ideal for heavily processed (perms, relaxers, bleach, etc) hair as it provides extra moisture, strength, and protection against heat damage.

After regularly using olive oil on my hair, I noticed that it made my hair soft, shiny, and resilient. However, when I would notice that my scalp was getting dry and flaky, I would add a little bit of fresh lemon juice in olive oil and that did wonders to both my scalp and my hair!

3. Castor Oil

Thicker than other oils, castor oil is made by extracting oil from seeds known as castor beans of the Ricinus Communis plant. Although castor oil is best known as a natural laxative, it has massive hair-health benefits: helping hair to grow longer, reducing hair loss, helping treat dry scalp, etc.

Castor oil is super rich in Vitamin E, fatty acids, and a whole variety of hair-healthy minerals. Ricinoleic acid, which is an Omega 9-fatty acid, contained in castor oils help treat and reduce dandruff and other frustrating scalp inflammations. The oil also helps to lock in hair’s moisture level & improves the blood flow to hair follicles which then results in faster hair growth.

I have personally seen results with using this oil in my hair care regimen. With a regular monthly use, my hair grew half an inch and my scalp felt much cleaner. A point to note, however, is that this oil is thick and viscous so make sure you apply it in small quantities first in order to avoid over-application and to always dilute it with another lightweight oil (ex. almond oil, or even coconut oil). Doing so will help ease the process of rinsing the oil out from the hair.

4. Sesame Oil

Sesame Oil is my mom’s favorite oil and my least favorite because of its overpowering odor and viscosity. My mother swears by this hair oil as she claims it helps soothe her scalp making it less dry, flaky, and itchy. This is true, actually. The antibacterial and anti-fungal properties in sesame seeds help to reduce common skin infections on the scalp, including dandruff. The inflammations and irritations on the scalp and around the hair roots cause hair to become weak and fall out. Massaging this oil onto the scalp can help ease this problem in no time. Sesame oil is also known to improve thinning hair and small bald patches. Since it is also an emollient just like olive oil and almond oil, it helps to soften and strengthen hair strands as well.

5. Argan Oil

On your last visit to Walmart when you were shopping for shampoos, you probably came across numerous hair products containing Argan oil. This is no surprise because Argan oil is widely known to have amazing hair benefits. The oil itself is made from nuts of the Argan trees found in Morocco and is famously called “liquid gold” due to its deep golden color.

Argan oil is also rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids that help produce new cells and healthy regrowth of hair fortified with anti-oxidants. This allows the oil to repair hair’s texture, frizz, color and sheen, and the oil also helps to add volume to thin, dull hair.

You can easily use Argan oil as a leave-in conditioner, scalp moisturizer to fight dryness and dandruff, and undo damage to the hair from styling, dyes, and chemical treatments. Since I started using the oil regularly, I noticed that the color of my hair deepened, my scalp felt healthy, and best of all, my hair regrew in a matter of weeks!

6. Sweet Almond Oil

Another great oil to use is sweet almond oil. Besides being rich in Vitamin E, and fatty acids, sweet almond oil is loaded with magnesium too. Vitamin E adds shine to the hair, fatty acids promotes hair smoothness, and magnesium reduces hair breakage and helps the hair to grow stronger. The emollient properties in almond oil gives the hair a softer texture, making it easier to manage while styling or combing.

This is by far my favorite hair oil as it is quite light, clear consistency, and leaves my hair less prone to breakage. Regular use of almond oil also made me feel like it helped smooth out my split ends and my hair felt soft and silky to the touch. The win for me, however was that it did not make my hair too greasy and neither does it contain any strong odors.

7. Grapeseed Oil

When you are stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol, which causes hair loss. Grapeseed oil prevents hair loss caused by cortisol and instead promotes new hair follicle growth. If you are looking to regrow lost hair, this oil is perfect for you!

The oil is extracted from cold-pressing grape seeds and the antioxidants contained in Grapeseed oil also prevents the production of DHT that causes hair loss. Vitamin E found in Grapeseed oil strengthens fragile, damaged hair and restores its stamina and shine.

Just like other oils mentioned above (i.e. olive oil, coconut oil, etc), Grapeseed oil is an efficient natural hair and scalp moisturizer and conditioner, preventing dandruff and dermatitis. Because it is lighter than most oils, it won’t make your hair feel greasy and it also is odorless!

8. Jojoba Oil

Even though this is not exactly an oil, but a liquid wax extracted from the seeds of the Jojoba plant, it is on the list of oils because it has fabulous scalp and hair-health benefits! Correctly pronounced as “Ho-Ho-Ba” oil, it repairs dry & damaged hair, stimulates the rate of hair growth, and cleans out the scalp.

The real miracle work of this oil is that it has similarities of sebum, the natural oils produced by our scalp. As a result of this similarity, jojoba oil helps to maintain the natural balance of sebum on the scalp and hair, making it moisturized and germ-free. Vitamin E found in the oil, as usual, helps to eliminate free radicals and the fatty acids in the oil nourish the hair follicles. Jojoba oil is also known to help with premature aging and restoration of hair.

I use this oil mixed with castor oil to reduce viscosity of castor oil.

How To Use Oils For Hair

Now that we know what the best oils are for hair and how they help restore our hair’s strength, I just want to give you a few quick pointers as to how you can use them. The first and most important tip is to use these oils warm.

This is called a “hot oil treatment”.

Never warm oils in the microwave; instead, take out a few spoons of oil (depending on your hair length) and place it in a jar. Now fill a small bowl with hot water and place the jar of oil in this water bowl. Within a few minutes, the oil will get warm enough for you to use. Warm oil helps to open up the hair follicles and shaft, allowing oils to penetrate deeply.

Another tip is to massage the scalp with your fingers for a good 5-7 minutes. This ensures good blood circulation, promoting hair growth. After application, use a hot towel to wrap your hair for 15-30 mins or use a shower cap to cover your head. Also, you can leave the oil on for as long as you like or even overnight for better benefits.

Lastly, feel free to mix the oils, depending on what hair concern you are trying to fix. All are amazing on their own but together they are powerful! Try adding a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the mixture as well for added benefits or to mask an overpowering odor. I have a list of best essential oils here that you can read through as well.

How Often To Use Hair Oils

Remember to use the oils regularly. By regularly, I mean at least 1-2 times a week. Nothing happens overnight but if you are persistent with taking care of your hair, you will see results that last a lifetime!

I hope this post was helpful in informing you about all the oils I think are the best to help with hair loss. Please feel free to tell me which ones you will be trying and/or if you have seen results with any of them, I would love to hear about it! Leave me a comment below.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us! I always used to associate castor oil with cars and wondered how that could possibly help the state of my hair; I tried castor oil on my hair for the first time, while I ate sour grapes with a side of raspberries and blueberries. Haha The castor oil did wonders for my hair! It is now so soft, voluminous, my ends don’t break off like they used to, and my hair has definitely grown. Needless to say, castor oil is now a staple in my bathroom. Haha Great read! God bless you!

    1. Haha, I am glad it helped with your hair concerns, C.N.! I hope you diluted the oil with another oil that was lighter to reduce its thickness. Thank your for letting us know about your results here 🙂

  2. Very well-written article on helping people with their hair loss problem using oils. I have not tried oiling my hair but after reading how helpful these oils are, I am changing my mind! Can I actually mix a bunch of these oils together and then massage into my head and hair? What oils would you suggest I mix? I have a dry scalp and frizzy hair because of using flat iron…

    1. Hey Alyse, great question! Yes, feel free to mix any oils as you would like. Since you have frizzy hair and dry scalp, I would highly suggest you begin with mixing olive oil, sweet almond oil and a few drops of tea tree essential oil. This oil treatment should do wonders to your hair and will reduce the heat damage done to it with the daily use of flat iron- Good luck!

  3. Wow! This was good to know. I have used Argan oil but didn’t know to heat it. I put a drop or two in the palm of my hands and smooth it into the ends of my hair. It helps with dry ends. I’ll have to try these scalp treatments though as I think it could help my brittle hair. 🙂

    1. You do not have to warm up the oil if you are just applying to your ends. In fact, when you rub the oil in your palms, that creates the right amount of heat to warm up the oil also for the ends of your hair and this is a great way to keep the ends moisturized!

  4. Hi there,

Great post, it’s not often you get all the information you need from one article, so congrats on achieving that!

I really need to start using these oils and getting into a routine of using them too. At least now I know how to use them. I’ve never heard of sweet almond oil, so I might try that one since it’s your favourite.

Looking forward to seeing what you write next.
