It is a powerhouse herb filled with nutritional goodness that helps heal not just your hair but so many aspects of your health too! Moringa benefits for hair growth are widely known by people in Asia and Africa, but now moringa is gaining popularity here in the western world as well!

Today, I want to share what I know about moringa, how it benefits your health, your hair and how you can use the herb at home.

What is Moringa?

Moringa (Moringa Oleifera) is a tropical plant that grows easily and is native to India and Africa. It is known by many names in all different languages; some of these names include Muringa, drumstick tree, horseradish tree, benzoil tree, ben oil tree, etc.

For centuries, moringa has been used in Ayurvedic practices for its medicinal properties. Nearly every part of the plant is edible! It’s bark, sap, oil, leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots are all beneficial to human health in different ways.

In 2008, the National Institute of Health called moringa the “plant of the year,” for its nutritional and healing properties.

In recent times, the plant has gained a popular reputation by being nicknamed “the miracle plant” and has been featured on Dr. Oz, The View, and even the Discovery Channel picked up its power-packed health benefits.

Health Benefits Of Moringa

So why is it coined the “miracle plant”, anyway?

Moringa is considered a superfood that is believed to help you manage various different health concerns like malnutrition, aging, and it can even help fight inflammation in the body.

According to my research (mainly from the internet, of course), there have been numerous studies conducted on moringa and its positive effects on health. Here is what I have found in the form of a list for easy understanding (I love bullet points!):

  • Boosts heart health
  • Increases immune function
  • Slows the signs of aging
  • Balances hormones
  • Aids in digestive health
  • Balances blood sugar levels (prevents diabetes)
  • Retains skin’s moisture & elasticity
  • Stabilizes mood
  • Improves brain function & memory
  • Reduces oxidative stress & inflammation

Moringa Benefits For Hair Growth

If you are impressed with the health benefits of moringa so far, wait ‘till you read about all the ways it helps your hair! I couldn’t believe how impactful this one simple plant is for hair and I am so excited to share this knowledge with you now:

1. Nourishes The Hair

Moringa is loaded with healthy nutrients like minerals, vitamins, and amino acids that all act as a natural moisturizer for the hair. For anyone struggling with dry hair and scalp, moringa is highly recommended.

The human body contains 20 amino acids, 9 of which are considered essential as they need to be supplied by the food we consume. Moringa is one of the very few such foods that contain ALL 9 essential amino acids! These compounds carry out vital activities in the body, including hair follicle nourishment and growth.

2. Strengthens The Hair

Moringa leaves contain a powerful set of B vitamins like thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, biotin, folic, and pantothenic acid that work together to make hair shinier, thicker, and stronger.

The plant is packed with the highest content of nutrients needed for healthy & strong hair. Here’s a quick comparative breakdown:

  • 7x richer in Vitamin C than oranges
  • 4x richer in Vitamin A than carrots
  • 4x more Calcium than milk
  • 3x more Potassium than bananas
  • 9x more Protein than yogurt
  • 5x more Iron than spinach

3. Ensures Healthy Scalp

Anti-inflammatory properties in moringa help to soothe scalp eczema, keep follicles healthy and minimize hair loss. Antioxidants in moringa have antibacterial effects that help to keep the scalp clean and free of most infections. They also prevent free radicals that cause oxidative stress to occur, thereby reducing the chances of androgenic alopecia.

Moringa is rich in phytochemicals that work as a defense against diseases and scalp inflammations. These phytochemicals may not be as essential for hair as vitamins and minerals but they are equally beneficial for scalp health.

4. Promotes Healthy Growth

Loaded with Vitamin E, moringa is known to promote healthy hair growth by boosting hair’s shine and elasticity. Moringa also contains cysteine that protects hair from sun damage and is considered one of the most crucial amino acids that is responsible for hair growth.

Omega-3 fatty acids in moringa provide nutrients to hair follicles, ensuring hair grows thicker.

Zinc is another essential mineral found in abundance in moringa that promotes hair growth. This mineral enhances immune function and ensures damaged hair follicles are repaired effectively and quickly.

5. Prevents Hair Loss

Zinc deficiencies in an individual are often linked to hair loss. Moringa helps to restore zinc levels in the body, which then prevents hair loss.

It also plays a big role in unclogging sebaceous pores, inducing regulated sebum production. This helps in reducing dandruff, split ends, and hair breakage.

Using moringa regularly increases Vitamin A levels, which help maintain optimal function of hair follicles. Vitamin Deficiencies also often lead to hair loss.

On the contrary, overdose of Vitamin A can also cause hair loss. It is advised to consult a doctor in regard to appropriate dosage in order to avoid risk of adverse reactions.

Moringa Hair Care

Now that we know moringa benefits for hair, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to actually use the herb?

Well, there is no “one” universal way to use moringa. In fact, there are numerous ways you can use the herb for your hair. For the most part, you can either use moringa orally or topically.

How to Use Moringa For Hair

From consuming moringa to applying it directly to your hair, the ways to use this herb has endless possibilities. Here are 5 ways to use moringa to get gorgeous hair!

1. Moringa Oil For Hair

Massage your scalp with moringa oil to nourish it with all the nutrients your hair needs. You can add it to your choice of carrier oil to double up on the benefits and even add a few drops of essential oils.

Here is a recipe for reducing hair loss (please adjust the quantity as per your hair length and density):

Ingredients:

Directions:

Massage the oil on your scalp for a few minutes with your fingers and also apply the oil over your hair. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes before you wash your hair as usual. Repeat twice or every week for best results.

2. Moringa Powder For Hair Growth

You can easily add moringa to your diet as it is available in powder and capsule form. The powdered moringa can be added to your favorite smoothie, juices, or even salads! You can even eat the leaves of the plant as well as the flowers!

It is best to consult your doctor for the right dosage amounts if you would like to take moringa as a supplement in capsule form.

Here is a green smoothie recipe you can try with moringa powder:

Ingredients:

  • 2 Bananas
  • 2 tbsp Vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • 1 cup Almond Milk
  • 2 tsp Moringa Powder
  • 2 tbsp Honey

Directions:

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Enjoy it for breakfast, lunch, or with your dinner.

3. Moringa Hair Mask

Another way to use moringa is as an ultra moisturizing hair mask.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together with a spoon in a bowl or use a blender. Apply to scalp and hair. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes and then wash off as usual. Use this hair mask once a week for best results.

4. Moringa Liquid Extract for Hair

The liquid extracted from the leaves of moringa is an excellent addition to your daily health routine. There are studies that show the body absorbs minerals and vitamins much faster from liquids as opposed to capsules! Moringa leaf liquid extract can be added to any drinks, including smoothies, juices, and even just your regular water intake for the day.

5. Moringa Tea For Hair

Last but not the least, you can consume moringa tea to reap all the benefits for hair as well. Personally, I find the taste of moringa tea to be quite bitter for my liking, even when I add honey; so I always blend it with other herbal teas like bamboo tea or green tea.

Alternatively, if you are not much of a tea-drinker, you can still make the tea but instead of drinking it, you could use it as a hair rinse! A herbal hair rinse is the best way to give your hair that added shine it needs by locking in moisture and closing up the cuticles. Using moringa as a rinse will also boost hair growth.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Moringa tea (at room temperature)
  • Add more water depending on length of hair

Directions:

After you have washed your hair with shampoo and conditioner, pour moringa tea all over your scalp and hair. Massage the scalp for a few minutes and then rinse out with water.

You can also add the tea to a spray bottle and on your washday, spray the mixture on your scalp. Massage it in for a few minutes, focusing on your problem areas. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing it off as usual. This will definitely result in longer, thicker, and healthier hair.

Moringa Must-Knows

As you can see, moringa benefits for hair are many and it is undoubtedly a superfood you just cannot miss out on! Being the world’s most nutritious tree, it is packed with hair-nourishing and hair-strengthening properties as well as those properties vital for overall health!

However, it is important to note that consuming moringa over long periods of time can cause laxative effects and upset stomachs when overused. This is why it is advised to take the herb every several days, instead of daily.

In terms of required dosage recommendations, it is said that the optimum dose is 29 mg per kg of body weight. However, in simpler terms, it is best to take half a teaspoon of dried moringa orally for 3-5 days and slowly increasing this intake over a two-week period to avoid any adverse reactions.

Pregnant women must also try to avoid taking moringa supplements, not because it is harmful but because enough research has not been done to confirm if it is safe to consume during pregnancy.

Always do a patch test to check for possible allergies if using the herb topically.

And that’s a wrap, ladies!

What did you think about all the benefits moringa has to offer?

Will you try it for your hair or for your general health?

  1. I have several moringa trees on my land and it is indeed a miraculous tree, loaded with vitamins. I often take two seeds in the morning after breakfast. I swallow them like pills. Don’t bite them, the taste is incredibly bitter. I also eat the leaves and flowers, not as often as the seeds but from time to time. I haven’t made moringa tea yet and I think I will do that to use it as a hair rinse. How often should I do a moringa hair rinse? Once a week?

    1. I am impressed Christine! The seeds (as well as the plant) are incredibly bitter! So if you are going to use moringa as a hair rinse, it is best to do it once a week. 🙂

  2. Hi Sasha,
Wow! I did not know that moringa is a powerhouse herb! I also did not know of the many benefits listed in your article. I was only aware that it does slow down the signs of aging and the suggested intake was as a tea – and I did’nt like the taste. I think I was probably not preparing it correctly……

I am definitely going to be trying this out ( the tea and the oil) as hair treatments as the moringa plant is so packed with hair strengthening and nourishing properties. From experience, I have found that natural remedies are usually a lot better for my hair and I am sure that I would benefit from the Vitamin B and omega-3 fatty acids.
Thanks for the wealth of information provided.

    1. Hey Ceci, the tea definitely takes time getting used to. I usually blend it with mint or bamboo tea and add lots of lemon. Head on over to my post here to learn how to make herbal tea, if you would like pointers.

  3. I had no idea how nutritious Moringa is, or that you can use it as a hair treatment. I love the recipe using Moringa oil and may give it a try. My hair is quite dry so this sounds like a great conditioner for scalp and hair. Also using Moringa tea as a hair rinse sounds like a great idea. I’m not a tea drinker, so this would be a great way to enjoy it’s benefits without drinking it. Thanks for sharing such an informative article on Moringa:)

  4. This is a great read. Thanks for the wonderful info. I had never heard of moringa before reading this post and I definetely had no idea it would be good for my hair. I am a swim instructor in the summer months and my hair gets very dry and brittle from the chlorine. Would this be helpful for someone like me? I already use a leave in conditioner that I try to put on my hair before entering the water, but I do not always remember to do it. Thanks again for a great post!

    1. Hey Ashley, the easiest and most effective thing to do to save your hair from chlorine damage is to wet your hair first before going into the pool. So you can literally let the shower run through your hair before you step into the pool water. The idea behind wetting the hair is like sealing the cuticles shut so that chlorine does not get absorbed into the strands. Also, please make sure your wash your hair thoroughly (shampoo AND conditioner) after you are done swimming for the day so that all chlorine deposits can be removed from hair, if any. Hope that helps! 🙂

  5. I’m really interested in trying this! I have a hormone balancing smoothie that I drink every morning for breakfast and I might have to add the leaves to it every once in a while for an extra little something for my hormone and my hair! I put shatavari in it now and it’s the same where after a long period of time it can cause an upset stomach so I’ll be sure to keep that in mind.

I’m also super interested in the oil. For a 4 FL oz pretty big bottle the price isn’t too bad! Once a week I split my hair in a few sections and drop jojoba oil on my scalp and massage it and let it sit until I shower at night but I’m almost out and was looking for an alternative!

    1. hey Haley, the oil will definitely last you a very long time..so for the price, it really is a great deal. As far as consuming moringa goes, you will have to slowly build your intake to avoid any episodes of upset stomach!
