4 Herbal Teas For Hair Growth You Need To Start Drinking Daily

Table of Contents

Tea drinkers can not stop raving about the fantastic health benefits they receive from drinking their favorite teas. Aside from tasting wonderful, teas provide the body with an abundance of antioxidants. But do they do anything for hair?

Absolutely!

Some herbal teas for hair growth are equally tasty, easy to make, and do wonders for your hair health.

In this post, you will learn about the hair benefits of drinking herbal teas, what kind of teas work best for hair growth and how to make them. You will also find out how to use these teas as a hair rinse to double up on the benefits they provide!

Drinking Tea For Hair Growth

It is no secret that teas provide a great deal of health and wellness benefits. They have a healing effect on the body that ultimately gives skin a healthy glow, calms the nervous system, and even helps relieve stress.

Herbal teas take these benefits a step further. Nearly all herbs contain medicinal properties and are a great alternative to sodas and caffeinated drinks. They aid in digestion, clean out vital organs in the body, reduce inflammation, and help the body avoid colds.

Nothing beats the feeling of sipping a warm cup of tea, be it on a cold, winter day or even a hot summer one. Teas can be enjoyed all year-round!

But what if I told you, you can sip your way to healthy hair growth? You won’t believe me, right? Right.

As far-fetched as it sounds, there is some truth to this claim. Okay, maybe more than just ‘some’.

Let’s find out what they are.

4 Herbal Tea Benefits For Hair

If you are having a hard time eating all the right foods or remembering to take your supplements on time, a great way to supplement your diet and get some healthy nutrients along with the ‘feel-good’ factor is by drinking herbal teas!

What makes herbal teas so great for hair?

1. Scalp Stimulation

Did you know that drinking teas can actually stimulate your scalp? So here is what happens. Generally speaking, herbal teas increase the blood stimulation in the body. Now when this happens, blood flow reaches the scalp and invigorates the hair follicles. Blood circulation in the scalp is important because it brings all the nutrients and oxygen the follicles need in order to grow strong hair. Since our body does not consider hair ‘vital’, it normally gets deprived of regular blood supply, stunting hair growth.

2. Follicle Nutrition

Herbs are loaded with hair healthy minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that act as a source of nutrition for each hair follicle. Think of it as ‘food for hair’. While eating fresh herbs is considered the best way to go, herbs that are dried and shrunk organically are far more potent. These herbs, when infused in teas aid immensely in promoting hair growth.

3. Blood Purification

Herbal teas are an absolute great way to remove toxins from the body. Toxins can severely impair the body’s basic functions, making it super difficult to grow hair. Most herbal teas can cleanse, detoxify, and purify the blood by acting as a natural diuretic. The antioxidants from the herbs help to eliminate the body of impurities and the antiseptic qualities of herbs ensure to purify the blood further.

4. Strong & Shiny Hair

Drinking herbal teas not only increases hair growth but it also improves the overall hair quality, making it strong and shiny from inside and out. This is all thanks to the endless vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants herbs are filled with.

A vitamin deficiency in the body can impair hair’s health and gradually reduce hair from growing. Consuming herbal teas regularly helps to reduce hair breakage, shedding, and makes hair stronger from the roots.

The 4 Best Herbal Teas For Hair Growth

With so many herbs out there on the market to choose from, how do you know which tea has the most benefits for hair health? Are there certain herbs that grow hair faster?

To be quite honest, there are way too many herbs to list and it all depends on what tastes you prefer. Some people like a more intense-tasting tea and others like their teas more on the mild side.

Below is a list of four herbal teas that you need to start drinking if you would like to see your hair grow long and strong! These are teas that I have recently been devouring and have seen a great improvement in the quality of my hair!

Keep in mind, some of these teas are not commonly found everywhere. I usually get my teas from Starwest Botanicals and HerbsPro because I love that they mostly use premium quality, organic, and non-GMO ingredients.

Starwest Botanicals even carry recyclable Eco-pouches for loose organic teas – how convenient!

You can also try Herbal Goodness for all your organic herbal teas and more.

1. Bamboo Leaf Tea

Have you ever heard of bamboo tea? Bamboo contains the highest amount of silica than any other plant or food source out there. Silica helps the bamboo plant grow faster and stronger. This is the same effect silica has on human hair as well. As we grow older, the levels of silica in our body drops. The foods we eat that contain silica (cucumbers, brown rice, oats) don’t truly help to level out these drops.

Drinking bamboo tea is a great way to add silica to our system, which then helps to promote healthy hair growth. Besides, it is quite pleasant tasting, even for non-tea drinkers!

2. Green Tea

Who here loves green tea? I know I do! Organic green tea contains potent antioxidants, vitamins and flavonoids that stimulate hair growth. It is also well-known to reduce DHT production, a hormone responsible for hair loss. Drinking green tea can block excess DHT and prevents the hormone from binding to hair receptors that make it weak and shed.

Drinking green tea regenerates the hair follicles, providing it with nourishment and healthy blood flow filled with nutrients. It helps fight off free radicals and restores hair’s shine and health. Panthenol (a form of B vitamin) helps to repair and improve split ends, while strengthening hair’s internal structure, giving it elasticity.

3. Moringa Tea

I have talked about the many benefits of Moringa previously but did you know that you could also drink it as a tea to promote hair growth? Moringa is a power-packed herb that nourishes the scalp and is essential for faster hair growth! High levels of iron & zinc in moringa stimulates the scalp with adequate oxygen supply to produce thicker hair growth and reduce further hair loss.

Antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids help to transform dry & brittle hair into hair that is full of life and bounce! Drinking moringa tea allows the scalp to regulate it’s sebum production, helping it fight off itchy & flaky patches and keep dandruff at bay. This is just one herb that cannot be skipped on if you are looking to increase hair growth!

4. Guava Leaf Tea

I bet you haven’t heard that guava leaf tea helps with hair regrowth and hair loss support as well. Guava leaves are filled with antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress and eliminate free radicals that lead to premature ageing of hair. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in Guava leaves help to treat almost all hair problems that lead to hair loss including excessive dandruff, scalp inflammation and even infections. Drinking guava leaf tea helps treat anemia, which can also be one of the reasons for most of your hair loss.

How To Make Herbal Tea At Home

Every box of tea bags comes with its own steeping instructions, which I highly suggest you follow. However, if you are by any chance using dry mixtures of herbs that you have packaged in bags yourself or whether you have bought loose dry herbs from an organic store, here is how you can make a basic cup of herbal tea from the comfort of your home!

Brewing Herbal Tea:

  • Boil water in a teapot on the stove.
  • Turn off the flame and wait for a minute to allow the water to cool just a bit before you add your choice of herbs.
  • Cover the pot and let the tea steep (or infuse) for at least 15-20 minutes, depending on your preference for taste (i.e. steep for longer if you prefer a stronger flavor).
  • Strain & pour out in your favorite cup and enjoy!

Optional: Add other ingredients to suit your taste (lemon for freshness or raw honey for natural sweetness).

Herbs to Water Ratio

In general, when you are using fresh herbs to make tea, it requires three times as much as with dried herbs. For every one cup of tea, use 1 tsp of your choice of dried herb mixture and 1 cup of water. Adjust this ratio if you are making a bigger batch of herbal tea.

Re-use Upto 3 Times

Not to be thrifty, but you can actually reuse the strained herbs upto 3 times to get the same flavor and nutrients out of the tea. Using it only once and then discarding them is such a disservice to these amazing goodness! Just boil fresh water again, add the used herbs, continue to boil for just 1-2 minutes and turn the flame off and steep for another 15-20. Strain and enjoy once again!

How to Store

The tea can be refrigerated in an airtight jar, bottle, or flask for up to 2 days before it loses its medicinal properties.

Herbal Tea Hair Rinse

You may not be a tea-drinker like me and neither may you enjoy the taste of herbs. Guess what? This is totally fine- I have another method to share with you where you could reap the hair-benefits from herbal teas without actually drinking them.

For example, you could use herbal teas as a final hair rinse. If you are wondering what the heck that is, allow me to explain!

You could take the herbal tea you made (from the guidelines I provided in the previous section of this post) and use it as a final rinse over your hair to make it soft, shiny, and add bounce.

Here’s How:

After you have shampoo-ed and conditioned your hair, pour the herbal tea (rinse) over your head. No need to rinse with water; this is why it is called a ‘final rinse’.

It is advised to use a herbal rinse on your hair once a week only (overusing it may lead to dry & brittle hair). The herbal benefits from the tea rinse not only help to improve the hair’s appearance and feel but also clean out the scalp of impurities and buildup.

You can literally use any herb or blend of herbs for your tea rinse and even use it as a shampoo or a deep conditioning scalp treatment, provided you do not have any allergies to the herb you are using!

Word of Caution

Whether you are drinking or ‘rinsing’ herbal teas for hair growth, there are a few things you must consider. Although most herbs are considered safe to consume, it is always advised to avoid them if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or have thyroid issues. Always consult your family physician before you embark on a herbal journey to ensure there are no contraindications with existing health conditions or medications.

Also, please note that drinking herbal teas won’t magically grow your hair. While they do help substantially on their own, supplementing them with the right kind of foods and practicing proper hair care habits all contribute to improving your hair’s health.

Are you a tea drinker or would you prefer to use herbal tea as a final hair rinse?

Which herbal tea is your most favorite?

  1. Hi Sasha,

I love drinking tea every day, so it’s good news that it also helps hair growth. When people get a certain age, they have to start caring for hair loss. That’s why I came across your post to get more tips from an expert like you.

From your recommendations, I prefer green tea the most since I have it with my family all the time, so it’s like getting extra benefits from things that I am doing already. But, I also love to try Guava Leaf Tea, which is so special and has so many benefits to our body, not just for hair. I’ll take serious consideration and share this information with my parents.

Thanks for sharing this educational post today. 🙂

    Matt

    1. Hey Matt, I love that you already dink green tea with your family! It is also a staple in my home and has been for many years. Thanks so much for thinking of sharing this post with your family! 🙂

  2. Hello,

That is very interesting list of herbal teas. I had no idea teas could help for hair growth. I also didn’t know the many health benefits. I knew of some, but especially didn’t know that it helps to regulate DHT. I had trouble with that at one time and didn’t know anything about it at the time. I wish I came across your website earlier but now that I have found it, I am bookmarking it!

You’re very thorough with the information. Great website.

    1. Its interesting to find out little things that could make such big differences, right? I am so glad to know my articles are helping you!:)

  3. Hi Sasha, this was really informative! If I do drink any tea it’s usually green tea with lemon but I’ve wanted to try other types too. I knew that green tea had some benefits but I wasn’t aware of the benefits that you listed out. I also had no idea of all the hair benefits that these teas can provide. I’ve never heard of Moringa Tea before but after reading about it I would like to try it, is it easily available to find online? Thank you for putting this together and sharing your knowledge, I enjoyed reading about this topic!

    1. Hey Dereck, yes you can find Moringa tea online but usually it is blended with other beneficial herbs. Herbal Goodness is a great place to get moringa tea that is pure and organic. That’s where I usually get my supply! 🙂

  4. Hi Sasha, Thanks for sharing. I knew that green tea was beneficial for hair growth but I didn’t know about the others such as Bamboo Leaf and Guava Juice. I will have to check out your post about herbal goodness. Definitely, something I am interested in.

  5. Hi Sasha,

I do love tea but it’s pretty hot outside in the southern US right now. However, these sound so good I might just have to try it as I’m winding down at night! I drink a lot of tea in the fall and winter though for selfcare from staying inside so much and not getting as much sunlight. I’m super interested in the Moringa tea and will have to check that out.

I’ve also never heard of an herbal rinse after washing hair but I’m going to be cutting my girfriends hair this week and might have to try it out as part of the at-home spa experience!

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hey, Haley I started off drinking tea in the fall and winter months too! But now I am so addicted, it don’t matter if it’s rain or shine, I love my herbal teas 🙂

Moringa tea is awesome not just for hair but also for different aspects of hair as well- do check it out! I usually take mine in combination with bamboo tea- works really well for bones, skin and nails!

  6. Hello Sasha,

Never thought herbal teas can have positive effects on our manes. I drink tea sometimes when I constipated. I learned a lot from this article of yours. I think green tea and guava leaves tea are readily available here in the Philippines and I should try this.

Again, thank you for this article. I knew there are benefits to drinking herbal teas in our health but not in our hairs. I learned a lot.

    1. Hey Lemuel! Not many people know about the benefits herbal teas can have on hair. I didn’t either until recently myself, even though I have always been a fan of drinking different kinds of herbal teas. You are truly blessed to be in the Philippines where all these herbs (and many more) are easily grown and readily available!

    2. Herbal teas can supplement our hair health as well as our overall health. Yes, these teas will definitely be available in the Philippines. Do check them out if you get a chance and thank you for leaving your thoughts here!:)
