Try These 6 Effective Poses For Hair Growth With Yoga

Table of Contents

Hair benefits with yoga have been gaining a lot of popularity lately. But is it really possible to see hair growth with yoga exercises? The short answer is: yes, it is absolutely possible! Yoga can basically help your hair grow, curb hair loss, and improve the overall health of hair!

It is no secret that yoga helps to maintain a balance between the mind, body and soul. It does so by reducing stress levels and improving blood circulation in the body, both of which have a direct positive impact on the quality of hair.

In this article, I will explain how yoga can help grow hair and which poses are most effective for hair health. At the end of the post, you will also learn alternative ways to grow your hair.

Benefits Of Hair Growth With Yoga

Almost every woman is struggling with hair loss and as a result, the internet is filled with all kinds of solutions for women looking to grow back their hair. With these solutions comes countless products that are oftentimes costly and may or may not even work. Medications prescribed by physicians to deal with hair loss usually have lots of side effects.

Yoga comes to the rescue! Or should I say ‘hair-scue’?

Yoga works its magic through the combination of movement and breathing. Each yogic asana, or bodily position, has calming effects on the mind and different areas of the body including hair. These postures help improve a wide variety of hair problems like hair thinning, hair loss, stunted hair growth, and even premature hair greying.

The 3 Yoga For Hair Growth Benefits

The benefits of yoga for health are countless and widely known. But what are the benefits of yoga exercises for hair? How does it actually help hair grow?

1. Improves Blood Flow

Performing the asanas helps to stimulate and improve blood circulation from the body to the scalp. Healthy blood flow to the scalp leads to healthy hair growth. With the blood, comes oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles and this promotes hair that is nourished, healthy, and strong.

2. Provides Stress-relief

It is true that stress is one of the main causes of hair loss in women. Yoga stops stress in its tracks by reducing cortisol (stress hormone) levels in the body. Practicing yoga regularly helps to quiet the mind, relieve stress, reduce inflammation in the body and improves spirituality.

3. Yoga Is A Natural Remedy

The beauty about yoga is that it is a natural remedy to all health problems, including hair. This means you are not exposing yourself to harmful chemicals or toxins. Instead of spending a fortune on commercial solutions, yoga can be practiced at the comfort of your home, free of cost! All you need is a yoga mat to roll out!

Yoga Poses For Hair Growth

Not all yoga exercises affect the hair in the same way. When practicing yoga to reap the maximum benefits for hair, it is best to perform all forward-bending poses. These are asanas that involve the crown of the head being inverted so that all the blood flow is directed there.

Below is a list of the 6 most effective yoga poses for hair growth. The best time to practice these postures is in the morning on an empty stomach for 1-3 minutes. If you are a beginner, you can reduce the time for each pose to 15-30 seconds.

1. Downward-Facing-Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

This pose is almost like a dog leaning forward, hence the name. This is a fab pose to stretch out your spine and neck, thereby reducing stress. It also engages your abdominal muscles, easing out digestion issues. Since the head is in a downward position, blood circulation to the scalp helps to strengthen out the hair follicles.

How To Perform:

  • Begin with an upside down V pose
  • Align your feet with your hips and your hands directly under your shoulders
  • Keep your arms and legs straight and your abs pushed inwards and pelvis raised
  • Keep your head down and eyes on your belly
  • Breathe deeply in and out and hold position

2. Headstand (Sirsasana)

This is an advanced level asana that involves balancing the body on top of the head. The headstand is an upside-down position of the body which increases the blood flow to the head, while activating the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

This pose is particularly beneficial in making dormant hair follicles reach their maximum hair growth capacity. It also helps to prevent premature hair greying and reducing hair loss.

How To Perform:

  • From a downward dog pose, keep your head down & bend down your knees to the floor
  • Interlock your fingers behind your head to support the crown of your head
  • Gently raise your legs up (one at a time, if easier) to stand upside down, perpendicular to the floor
  • Keep your legs together and arms straight to maintain balance
  • Once stable, breathe in and out, while keeping abs engaged

3. Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana)

The shoulder stand is considered to be one of the best yoga exercises for hair growth. It is an easier pose to perform than a headstand and is super effective for thyroid issues that cause hair loss. It is known to relieve stress, calm your mind, and improve hair health by increasing blood flow to the head.

How To Perform:

  • Lie on your back and raise your legs and back up straight above you
  • Use your hands to support your body and keep your buttocks straight & upwards
  • Allow your body to rest on your shoulders
  • Keep your neck straight, toes pointed towards the ceiling & eyes on your feet
  • Breathe in and out a few times and hold this position before you release

4. Forward Bending Camel (Uttanasana)

The Forward Bending Camel pose is beginner-level and relatively easy to perform. Practicing this asana sends blood and oxygen rushing to the scalp, which enables the hair follicles to stay nourished. This promotes new hair growth that is strong, smooth and shiny. The pose is also effective in calming down nerves, reducing migraines, and improving sleep quality.

How To Perform:

  • Stand with your feet together and arms by your side
  • Taking a deep breath, bend forward and touch the mat beside your feet (or as far as you comfortably can)
  • Hold this position for a few short seconds (or as long as you comfortably can)
  • Keep your head down, eyes closed, and neck relaxed
  • Exhale on your way up and repeat a few times

5. Back Bending Camel (Ustrasan)

The back-bending camel pose is a popular pose and often recommended by yoga experts for faster hair growth. The hair follicles are nourished with oxygen and nutrients, which then speed up the hair growth process and also reduces hair fall. This pose stretches the back, neck and spine and improves back strength. It involves dropping the head back to increase the blood flow to the scalp and opening up your upper body.

How To Perform:

  • Kneel down on your mat and keep your knees hip length apart
  • Bend backwards and drop your head & neck backwards too
  • Arch your spine and push your pelvis forward
  • Try to touch the soles of your feet
  • Breathe in and out a few times before you release & repeat

6. Rabbit (Sasangasana)

The rabbit pose looks more complex than it actually is. It is a forward-folding pose which can be performed without being completely upside-down. It involves the crown of the head to be pressed downward into the ground, relieving stress, balancing hormones and thyroid issues, stimulating blood circulation, and activating the pituitary gland. The rabbit asana is an effective yoga pose for healthy hair growth.

How To Perform:

  • Begin in a Child’s pose, with your knees on the yoga mat and feet tucked under your buttocks.
  • Keep your head as close as you can to your knees
  • Place your hands on either side of your body and hold your heels for support
  • Fold forward & allow the crown of your head to press down into the mat
  • Raise your pelvis and buttocks upwards, away from your feet
  • Hold this pose for a few minutes or rock back & forth to massage the scalp on the mat
  • Take deep breaths and repeat

Natural Hair Growth Tips For Women

Aside from these above yoga asanas, there are a couple of other things you can do to ensure faster hair growth. However, if yoga is not for you, don’t worry! You can still choose other easy and natural ways to grow your mane. Below is a list of some of my favorite methods to improve my locks.

1. Regular Scalp Massage

Give yourself regular scalp massages. This is important because it stimulates blood circulation to the scalp and this allows the body to send oxygen and essential nutrients to the hair follicles. Massaging the scalp also helps regulate sebum production, which allows the scalp to stay hydrated, balanced, and clean. A healthy scalp leads to hair growth that is strong, long, and luscious.

You can use carrier oils that repair hair or handheld scalp massaging tools for a few minutes every day. Alternatively, you can also use wooden combs for hair as they have great benefits for both the scalp and hair.

Massage your scalp for a few minutes with your fingers (not nails) with your choice of oil. Add essential oils to the mix for added benefits and use the inversion method to grow hair faster.

2. Improve Hair Care Habits

When you take gentle care of your hair, you are not only protecting it from avoidable damage but also ensuring that hair growth is not stagnant. Your styling habits as well as your washing habits all play a key role in how healthy your hair grows and remains.

Heat damage is the most common type of self-inflicted damage you can do to your own tresses. Reduce the use of hot hair-styling tools. Use a microfiber hair towel to avoid hair breakage, static, and frizzy hair. Avoid hairstyles like tight braids, buns, or ponytails as they can pull hair and cause hair thinning.

Choosing the right hair products like shampoos, sprays, serums, etc, can also impact the quality of your hair. Avoid shampoos containing harsh chemicals and use organic, plant-based ingredients instead.

3. Indulge in Proper Nutrition

What you eat has a direct connection with the health of your hair. Eating a balanced diet that is filled with vitamins, proteins, and essential fats like Omega 3’s is crucial to not just your health but that of your hair as well.

Human hair is mainly made up of protein (keratin) that coats the hair shaft and protects it from damages. A diet rich in protein helps the body build up keratin in the hair. Similarly, a diet free of deficiencies especially like iron and protein will really boost the texture of hair, making it more bouncy and full of shine.

Make sure to incorporate eggs, spinach, nuts, legumes, and whole grains in your diet and avoid sugars, starches and fatty foods.

4. Consume Hair Vitamins

In addition to proper nutrition, there are certain supplements that are designed specifically to make hair stronger. These are perfect for those people who are unable to get the right sources of vitamins and nutrients from the food they eat. These supplements or vitamins for hair can really help fix nutritional deficiencies that lead to hair loss and dull out hair.

However, it is important to remember not to over-indulge in these vitamins. An excessive intake of supplements can also lead to hair loss. It is best practice to follow the daily recommended dosage and only consume the recommended amount.

Also, be sure to choose vitamins that are vegan or derived from plants as opposed to being made chemically and confirm with your physician whether they are safe for you to consume.

My Journey Of Hair Growth With Yoga

Aside from maintaining harmony between mind and body, hair growth with yoga is absolutely possible. I have noticed immense benefits with practicing yoga regularly. It doesn’t even have to be for too long; nor does it have to be performed every day.

I practiced yoga asanas for upto 30 minutes only 3 times a week. I started and ended with a 15-minute meditation period, where I just focused on my breathing.

My Findings

What I found is that it really helped reduce my stress levels and cultivated clarity in my mind. After my yoga workout, I always felt mentally refreshed and physically light. I tried my best to maintain a balanced diet and practiced healthy hair care habits. I noticed my hair began to grow and my hair loss was reduced. It didn’t happen overnight, of course.

And it didn’t happen with yoga alone.

With the pandemic situation that we are currently in, yoga is an excellent way to kick stress out of our system. Besides, being at home more makes it easier to find time to devote to self-care, mental health, and hair health. Practicing yoga will help you two-folds if you are struggling with Covid-19 related anxiety and stress-induced hair loss!

  1. To be honest I never thought that yoga and hair growth would go together, but when you bring up reduced stress and anxiety, it totally makes sense! I can surely see an increase in hairloss when I’m stressed. What do I do to reduce my stress… excercise, meditate or yoga.

Thank you for this in-depth, very interesting post. All though I wish I could do the headstand, I’ll keep at it with the downward facing dog 🙂 Thank you, great article!

    1. Hey Veronica! The headstand is definitely a tough one to master! I always use the support of a wall or my bed’s headboard so even if I fall, i fall on my bed lol. But yes, you get the same hair benefits from the other poses as well! Meditation/yoga/exercise all do wonders for stress-relief for sure!

  2. My girl is absolutely going to LOVE this! Thank you so much! She’s obsessed with yoga and hair! Y’all would be bffs! lol. Great article!

  3. This is a very useful and practical post.

Hair loss is a very worrying problem for many people.  Apart from a couple of the yoga poses, there are definitely ones there that anyone will be able to do.

Your tips at the end are very practical and easily implemented too.

We always forget that our hair is living and therefore needs to be cared for just like the rest of our bodies.

  4. I’d never even considered yoga for hair growth, though while reading this article it makes complete since. Hair growth is all about scalp health, and scalp health requires good blood flow. Circulation is critical when it comes to blood flow, so doing activities that help circulation trickles down into other aspects of wellness.

  5. Sasha,

I never knew that yoga would help with hair growth. Though, it does make sense actually. I read an article recently that was mentioning that if you pull your hair slightly, obviously, not hard or anything, but on a daily basis, it actually helps with the hair growth. I’d imagine the same can be said of yoga since a lot of poses, your head is lowered more towards the ground. This would give the gentle tug of your hair natually to stimulate growth.

I wonder if mine grows so fast because I always have it up? I rarely keep my hair down, even when I’m just sitting on the couch watching movies or shows. Only because I do have really thick hair that tends to get in my face. And while I try not to get agitated over it, I mean, it is my hair after all, I still don’t like it in my face, especially when I’m trying to relax.

I’ll have to pass this along to my friends whose hair doesn’t grow quickly though! I’m sure they’ll appreciate it!

    Thanks!

    Katrina

    1. It is awesome that your hair grows super fast! Trust me, it is a blessing! 🙂
As far as the hair-pulling method goes, I personally have never tried it. Although I understand the logic, I still wouldn’t recommend doing it because even if you think you are ‘gently’ tugging, it might not be ‘gentle’ enough for your scalp. Best would be to just massage or comb with a wide tooth wooden comb…but that’s just my personal opinion!
Thank you for sharing the post with your friends and for sharing your thoughts, Katrina!

  6. I’ve wanted to do yoga for some time now but haven’t come round to it. I had no idea that it was good for hair growth but it makes sense, since yoga is so great for the body and mind and some positions stimulate bloodflow. Should these positions be taken in a yoga class or can I do them at home, and is Sirsasana an advanced position?

    1. Yoga is totally a game changer! You can do it at home by following a video on Youtube or in a class. However, I don’t think they are offering any in-person classes right now due to the pandemic. You may be able to find some virtual classes but you would have to pay for them. Sirsasana is definitely an advanced level pose!

  7. What a nice post you wrote! I really enjoyed reading it and I could not be silent about your post so I decided to leave my comment here and say Thank You for sharing this quality post with others.

Actually this is exactly the information that I was looking for information about the hair growth with yoga and when I landed on your website and read this post, it answered all my questions in detail.

So I’m happy that you decided to write about this topic and share it with people. It’s very useful and can definitely be used as a great source for everyone who is interested in this topic.

I will come back to your website again for sure and I’m looking forward to reading your new posts.)

    Thanks!

  8. I love this natural approach to hair growth! I’ve tried all of these yoga poses except for the headstand – I think I would need the wall for support with that one.

Just another reason to love yoga! Even if you don’t see much extra hair growth, you still get the physical and mental health benefits from doing these yoga poses.

    1. The headstand is definitely a tough one! Using the wall for support really does work. I also do it on my bed, using my headboard as support so if I fall, I am falling on my comfy mattress lol.

  9. I always thought hair growth was only possible through diet, hair products and genetic makeup today. I will definitely trying thisyoga method and recommending this to my friends and family. These poses do not look too easy but I’m sure after a few tries, I am definitely going to master it.

I like the fact that yoga is a natural remedy for hair growth, it also a form of exercise and it releases stress.

Thank you Sasha for this wonderful and interesting article. I will definitely give my feedback if I get to try it.

    1. There are many ways indeed to grow back your hair and yoga just happens to be one that is natural and has other health benefits. Thank you so much for stopping by Femi and do tell me how it goes if you do try out these poses!

  10. Hi SASHA,
I always thought that hair growth depends on your genes, diet, and other factors but I never thought that even yoga could do so much difference when it comes to hair.
I am facing a lot of hair fall nowadays and I am not able to figure out why is that so.

I am definitely going to try them out, will also share them with my friends and family members who are also going through these problems and I am sure that this article will definitely help them.

This information is so crisp and in detail. Thank you so much for this article, Very unique and easy to understand.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

    Cheers!

    1. You are actually right about the factors leading to hair loss. It could be many different reasons affecting your hair. Besides, being in the middle of a pandemic doesn’t help either lol! Thanks for sharing the post with your friends and fam and I really hope yoga helps you better your hair. Even if it doesn’t it will do lots for your mental health as well as your overall health 🙂
