Table of Contents

Herbs have been used for centuries by millions of people of all backgrounds to treat a wide variety of health conditions, including hair concerns. It is no secret that herbs have been known to treat many scalp conditions and they also aid in hair growth.

They are considered to be nature’s very own therapeutic agents and many people opt for herbal remedies over other conventional methods. But with so many herbs out there on the market, how do we know which ones work the best for hair?

Today, I will break down the best herbs that grow hair faster than anything else you have tried!

Best Herbs For Hair Growth

The list below all have one thing in common: faster hair growth! Although herbal remedies take their time to work, in that you have to be persistent and patient, these herbs are known to speed up hair growth. Let us find out how!

I will include links to make it easier for you to know where you can purchase these herbs. Some of the herbs will link out to 100% pure oils that you could include in with other carrier oils as hair masks or hot oil treatments; others will link to supplements that contain the said herb along with other possible hair benefitting ingredients.

1. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek Seeds Speed Up Hair Growth

Fenugreek seeds are famously known to speed up hair growth and improve the texture of hair making it stronger, thicker, softer and super lustrous. The seeds contain iron, potassium, protein, and vitamin C that all work to improve the quality of hair, strengthening it from the inside out. It is an effective treatment in preventing hair thinning, the premature greying of hair, and it also improves blood flow to the hair follicles.

These seeds are rich with a substance called lecithin that helps hair look shinier and strengthen the hair follicles so hair grows thicker. Nicotinic acid in fenugreek seeds is the main compound responsible for promoting healthy hair growth. The seeds also work as a natural conditioner that moisturizes and nourishes each hair strand.

3. Hibiscus

Hibiscus (flowers & leaves) is super rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C, flavonoids, amino acids that all work together in stimulating the blood circulation to the hair follicles, reviving those that are dormant. This triggers keratin production in the hair follicles, encouraging new and health hair growth!

The herb also protects the scalp from harmful UV rays by acting like a sunscreen, prevents dandruff causing yeast, and regulates the sebaceous glands to lubricate hair with the right amount of sebum oil. Lastly, hibiscus deeply conditions dry and frizzy hair to become smooth and silky and prevents it from prematurely greying also.

4. Ginseng

Ginseng is a popular Chinese & Korean powerhouse herb that is believed to regulate hormones, especially DHT, that contributes to hair loss. Excessive DHT causes hair loss and ginseng is a natural hair stimulant that reduces the production of DHT so that hair follicles remain a healthy size and hair continues to grow.

Aside from hormone regulation, ginseng contains saponins that help to reduce dandruff and cleanse the scalp of buildup. It also  increases blood flow to the scalp to strengthen the hair follicles and restores hair quality to have hair become thicker, more plump and soft to the touch. Lastly, it contains volatile oil which prevents hair’s natural hair color from eroding from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

It is packed with antioxidants like vitamin C, flavonoids, carotenoids that protect the scalp and hair from damage caused by free radicals. Large amounts of sulfur and silica contained in nettle are responsible for re-growing hair and allowing it to become healthier and shinier. It helps to prevent hair loss by inhibiting DHT production, reduces dandruff, and restores hair’s natural color and texture.

6. Rosemary

Rosemary is another powerhouse herb for fast hair growth that is packed with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic qualities. It is famously known to soothe an itchy scalp, eliminate dandruff causing bacteria, and also remove product & mineral buildup from hair and scalp. Rosemary contains ursolic acid that helps to promote blood circulation to the scalp to ensure more oxygen and nutrients are supplied to the hair follicles. 8. Moringa

Moringa is a herb that contains vitamins A and B that nourish the hair and scalp and this is essential for faster hair growth. Iron in moringa helps to provide the scalp with proper oxygen supply that aids in thicker and fuller hair growth and prevents further hair loss. Zinc allows for healthy hair follicles and regulates scalp’s sebum protection.

Sulphur and cysteine are powerful antioxidants found in moringa that not just shield the scalp from sun damage but also improve hair cells so hair is strong and thick. Omega 3 fatty acids and proteins from this herb transform dry & brittle hair to hair that is filled with elasticity, bounce and has less breakage. Saw palmetto contains antioxidants, fatty acids, phytosterols, and vitamins that help to strengthen hair from root to tip, preventing breakage, dry ends, and even hair thinning. It is an up and coming herb and there is still research being done on the many ways it can help with hair health.

10. Bergamot

Bergamot is loaded with antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that help to clarify the scalp of all impurities and free radicals that clog the pores and cause irritation. It is widely known for its calming properties that relax and soothe the scalp, while stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles.

Fatty acids contained in bergamot help to tame frizzy & dry hair into hair that is well hydrated, conditioned, and shiny. It helps to reverse the damage caused by silicone, chemical, and mineral buildup on the hair that makes it excessively dry and dull. Since hair fibers and the scalp is deeply nourished, bergamot helps to strengthen the hair follicles so that hair grows strong and healthy.

STOP HAIR LOSS NATURALLY!

Buyers Guide: 5 Tips To Consider

It can be quite difficult to find and choose the right kind of herbs for your hair as so many of them offer such valuable hair health benefits. Regardless of whether you choose to use herbs as powder, extracted oils, or even supplements, there are some useful things to remember. I have created a guide below to help you in buying from the right sources.

1. Read The Label

It is always best practice to follow the recommended dosage instructions. Be sure to not exceed the recommended dosage as this may cause some side effects like nausea, stomach pain, constipation, light headaches or even dizziness. Prolonged usage of some herbal ingredients may also lead to liver damage, pancreatitis, or even blood clotting in some people. This is rare but it may happen and so prevention is always better than prescription!

2. Trust The Source

It is imperative to do your own research on the quality of the ingredients as well as the production methods, regardless of whether it is a herbal remedy or something you are about to purchase. These herbs can be found in whole form or ground powder, extracts, oils, supplements, or even tablets.

3. Consult Your Doctor

Some supplements contain herbs that are not safe for people with certain conditions. Always consult with your doctor first to review possible contraindications of each herbal ingredient. Also, discuss with your pediatrician the use of herbs for your children  because they may not be safe for children under a specific age or may need adjustments in dosage.

4. Avoid Combining Herbs & Medications

Pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with medical conditions (i.e. liver, kidney disease etc) must be extra cautious and discuss the use of herbal ingredients with their physician. It is always advised to seek medical expertise before you start with any herbs to avoid combining them with existing medications.

5. Always Choose Organic

Plants attain a lot of substances like pollutants, pesticides, and harsh chemicals, all of which are toxic to humans, animals, and even our planet. When available, always choose organic herbs because they have no added chemicals during the plant’s growing phase, its production or its preservation.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Along with this guide, all I would like to re-emphasize is for you to choose quality and trust the brand of herbs that you decide to buy from this list of herbs that grow hair faster. Always choose certified organic products that are made by manufacturers who believe in sustainable, non-GMO, fair-trade, cruelty-free sourced herbs. 1. I have moringa trees, and I used to take their seeds in the morning and eat their leaves and flowers, but stopped for a while. I should take it up again. I wonder if I rub fresh peppermint leaves on my scalp, will it have the same effect? I had my hair short for a few years now but I am growing it again, so I will definitely use some of these recommended herbs to promote the growing process. Can I also use rosemary oil instead of herbs?

    1. Again, I would love to live where you are Christine, so I could grow my own trees and reap all the benefits from nature- how wonderful! There are so many benefits of Moringa leaves- you could have them as tea even!

I have never tried rubbing peppermint leaves directly on scalp, so I would not really know. However, I would advise to dry the leaves first and then crush them and add in an oil soak to apply to scalp. This will really help to soothe the scalp and promote hair growth!

Yes, you can definitely use rosemary oil instead of the whole herb. The links I have included, you can find the essential oils there as well 🙂

  2. This was for me an interesting read. I was excited to see that a few herbs mentioned in this article are also great for diabetics (moringa and nettle). The truth be told, all that we need was provided by the creator in nature.

I did not know about peppermint oil and scalp bacteria. I wonder if it will help itchy scalp (dermatitis). Thanks for taking the time.

    1. Yes, that’s right, Josephine- some of these herbs have medicinal properties and I totally agree with you about all cures can be found in nature!

Peppermint will definitely help soothe itchy scalps- I always love the cooling sensation I get by using the oil on my scalp.

Thank you for stopping by, Josephine and sharing your thoughts!

  3. This is a very good content for my mom she’s always looking for herbs thats good for hair & you are bringing some really important fulfillment here. I did want to know, does the herbs wil makes your hair glow?

It is a very good information keep the good work,

    venche

    1. Hey Venche, thanks for stopping by:) I am not sure what you mean by glow but these herbs will definitely strengthen the hair, in which case hair will become shiny and smooth (I am guessing you are referring to shine or luster of the hair?). I hope this answers your question 🙂

      Cheers,
      Sasha

  4. Hi Sasha,
thanks for sharing this text, it is extremely useful for people who are not happy with their hair. My hair is very dry and brittle and for years I have been trying in vain to find anything that would bring it back to life. It is also declining sharply. I’m not afraid of baldness because it’s thick enough, but it’s certainly not natural for it to fall in those quantities. The shampoos that exist on my market are extremely low quality and expensive. If the packaging says argan or macadamia oil, it is a very low percentage in the shampoo, insufficient for the care of my hair. That is why your text and the entire site in general is a real revelation. Of all the suggested herbs I would like Moringa and Hibiscus as they are for dry and brittle hair. I decided to reject chemistry and treat myself only with natural herbal preparations. I will definitely post something from the sites you suggested and follow your tips!
Keep going and all the best!
    Danijela

    1. Hey Danijela, so happy to hear my post was useful for you! I totally understand the frustrations you are going through about your hair and guess what? You are not alone but also know that most of the times the sudden hair loss is temporary and so is the dryness. There are a number of things you could do but key is to not do everything all at once (as much as you will be tempted to)! Try natural methods and products and give your hair time to get used to it. Yes, the natural herbal content is almost always close to non-existent in all beauty products out on the market. This is why it is a better alternative to switch to 100% certified organic herbs where and when you can. Moringa and hibiscus are truly great for hair-do give them a try and if you are wondering where to get them, feel free to try out the links in the post. I have done extensive research and only recommend those that are eco-friendly and certified organic! Hope this helps and let me know if you have further concerns! Lots of love, Sasha

  5. Sasha,

This information is great. My daughter has an issue with her hair growing so slow and she’s always complaining that she doesn’t like me to get her haircuts because her hair grows so slow. I’ll have to try some of your recommendations and see if that helps her!
Also, you say to choose the right product, but what about just growing your own herbs, mushing them up and using that? I don’t like buying a lot of products when it comes to natural rememdies, only because I notice that a lot of companies put a lot of added ingredients into something when there’s no need.

    Thanks!

    Katrina

    1. Hey katrina,
If you can grow your own herbs, that will be awesome! It doesn’t get any more organic than that! Sure, feel free to grow them and then use them in hair masks with nutrient-dense oils. Your hair will love all that goodness!

Oh and by the way, the links I have shared are only of those companies that don’t add any extra ingredients in their products. That is the whole reason why they are 100% organic.

      Hope this helps!
      Sasha

  6. Wow! I’ve learned so much about the hair growth potential of certain herbs. As a Nutri already know about the nutrients required to grow hair but I did know some of the herbs mentioned. I definitely found this post useful and have saved in case I need to buy some of the herbs mentioned but I’ll need to check if the shops ship to the UK -do you think they do?

    Thanks

    1. So happy to hear that you have found this info so useful! Herbs are just so hair-mazing! I am quite certain that the recommended online stores do ship internationally, UK included. But surely, do search on their FAQ or feel free to reach out to them via their “contact us” page! Hope this helps!

  7. I appreciate all the wisdom about the herbs, but can you share how to apply them? Are these topical remedies or should we ingest them??
    ? thanks

    1. Hi Andrew, sure I can- I will make another post with how-to’s. To answer your question: Most of the herbs are used in topical remedies. However, some of them are safe to ingest in tea forms as well.
